According to IDC and Omdia data, the region crossed the 100-million-unit threshold in 2024 and has remained there through 2025. That is 100 million new devices entering pockets, purses, and motorbike handlebar mounts — each one representing a screen crack, a water damage incident, or a theft claim waiting to happen. Yet fewer than 5% of these devices carry any form of device protection insurance.
This is not a coverage gap. This is a market failure hiding in plain sight.
The Market: Stable, Massive, and Growing Where It Matters
Southeast Asia’s smartphone market has matured past its hypergrowth phase, but the numbers remain formidable:
- 2023: ~98–100 million units shipped regionally
- 2024: ~100–101 million units (+2–3% YoY), crossing the symbolic 100-million mark
- 2025: ~100–101 million units (flat to −1% YoY)
The regional total is stable, but the country-level dynamics tell a more strategic story:
- Indonesia dominates at 34.6 million units in 2023, surging to approximately 40 million in 2024 (+15.5%) before stabilizing in 2025. Indonesia alone accounts for 35–40% of the entire regional market.
- The Philippines shows steady growth — from 17 million in 2023 to an estimated 18.6 million in 2025.
- Vietnam (~17–18 million), Thailand (~16–17 million), and Malaysia (~9–10 million) have remained relatively flat across the three-year window.
On the brand side, the mid-range price segment continues to expand. OPPO group (including OnePlus and realme) leads with 22% regional share in Q2 2025, followed by Samsung at 19%, Xiaomi at 18%, and Transsion (Infinix, Tecno, itel) at 14%. Apple holds approximately 8%. The rapid rise of Transsion — a brand synonymous with the entry-to-mid price segment — signals that device volumes are increasingly driven by affordable smartphones, typically priced between USD 100 and USD 300.
This price range is precisely where gadget insurance becomes most relevant. A cracked screen repair costing USD 80 on a USD 200 phone is a 40% financial hit — far more painful than the same repair on a USD 1,200 flagship.
The Demographic Lens: Who Can Actually Afford Device Protection?
Raw shipment volumes tell you how many devices enter a market. They do not tell you how large the insurable population is. To answer that, we need to overlay smartphone shipments against the working-age population — the cohort most likely to purchase devices with their own income and most likely to be receptive to an insurance add-on.
Using World Bank and UN World Population Prospects 2024 data, the working-age population (ages 15–64) across six key ASEAN markets looks like this:

Second, Thailand is the only country in this group where the working-age population is declining in absolute terms — from 50.3 million in 2023 to 49.8 million in 2025 — reflecting an aging demographic that will reshape the country’s consumer profile in the decade ahead.

The Ratio That Matters: Device Refresh Rate
Dividing annual smartphone shipments by the working-age population produces a ratio I call the device refresh rate — the percentage of working-age adults who acquire a new smartphone in any given year. This metric approximates the annual inflow of insurable devices relative to the population that can realistically afford both the device and its protection.
2025 Device Refresh Rates:
- Malaysia: ~38% (9–10 million devices ÷ 25.4 million working-age)
- Thailand: ~33% (16–17 million ÷ 49.8 million)
- Vietnam: ~25% (17–18 million ÷ 68.7 million)
- Philippines: ~24% (18.6 million ÷ 78.4 million)

The regional average of 24% implies that the average working-age Southeast Asian replaces their smartphone roughly every four years. But the variance across countries is dramatic — and strategically significant.
What the Ratios Actually Tell Insurers
Indonesia: Volume Leader, Penetration Laggard
Indonesia’s 40-million-unit annual market is, by absolute volume, the largest opportunity in the region. But its 20% refresh rate — the lowest of the five major markets — signals longer device holding periods, a higher proportion of entry-level devices, and potentially lower willingness to pay for add-on insurance at the point of sale. The sheer volume still makes Indonesia the centerpiece of any regional gadget insurance strategy. But a premium pricing model designed for Malaysia’s 38% refresh rate would likely misfire here. Indonesia demands high-volume, low-premium product designs — think embedded insurance bundled at the point of sale through e-commerce platforms or telco plans, priced at IDR 5,000–15,000 per month.
Thailand and Malaysia: Smaller Markets, Denser Opportunity
Thailand and Malaysia, with refresh rates of 33% and 38% respectively, present a fundamentally different dynamic. A higher proportion of working-age adults replace their devices each year, reflecting higher disposable income, shorter device lifecycles, and — critically — a consumer population that is more accustomed to paying for value-added services. These markets may be smaller in absolute terms, but the per-capita insurance opportunity is nearly twice Indonesia’s. Combined with higher average selling prices (more mid-range and flagship devices), Thailand and Malaysia could support standalone gadget insurance products at premium price points that Indonesian consumers would likely resist.
The Philippines and Vietnam: The Swing Markets
With refresh rates of 24% and 25%, the Philippines and Vietnam sit near the regional average. Both markets have young, growing working-age populations and rising smartphone penetration. They are the markets to watch — not because they lead today, but because their trajectories could tilt either way depending on how quickly embedded insurance products reach these consumers.
Implications for Insurtech Product Design
The data suggests three strategic imperatives for insurers and insurtechs entering the Southeast Asian gadget insurance space:
1. Segment by refresh rate, not by volume. A one-size-fits-all product across ASEAN will underperform. Indonesia needs high-volume embedded products; Thailand and Malaysia can support standalone, higher-premium offerings. Build the product architecture around device refresh dynamics, not just shipment counts.
2. Target the mid-range price band. With Transsion, Xiaomi, and realme collectively commanding over 50% of regional shipments, the insurable device universe is increasingly concentrated in the USD 100–300 range. Insurance products must be priced and designed for this segment — short policy terms (12 months), low deductibles, and instant claim settlement via digital channels. The flagship market exists, but it is not where the volume lives.
3. Build distribution around the point of sale. In markets with lower refresh rates, the window to sell gadget insurance narrows. If you miss the point of purchase — whether at an e-commerce checkout, a telco store, or a physical retailer — the probability of a post-sale conversion drops significantly. Embedded, API-driven insurance distribution is not a nice-to-have in Southeast Asia. It is the only viable channel for reaching 100 million devices at scale.
The Bottom Line
Southeast Asia ships 100 million smartphones every year into a working-age population of over 420 million. The insurance penetration on these devices remains negligibly low. The opportunity is not theoretical — the devices are shipping, the demographic dividend is still intact across most of ASEAN, and the distribution infrastructure (e-commerce, super apps, telcos) already exists.
The question for insurers and insurtechs is not whether this market is worth entering. It is whether they will design products granular enough to capture it — country by country, price band by price band, refresh rate by refresh rate.
One hundred million phones are looking for protection. The industry that figures out how to insure them affordably, instantly, and at scale will own one of Asia’s largest untapped general insurance segments.
